The story of Kilim Art Studio

Timeline

1. 2014

   After leaving Crimea, Yana Mikhalyants settled in Prykarpattia and began working with the region’s weaving tradition.[2]

2. 2015

   The studio dates the beginning of the Kilim Art Studio brand to this year.[10]

3. 2018

   An exhibition of Yana Mikhalyants’s painting and textile work opened in Kosiv; rugs based on her designs were woven by Mariia Kichak from Pistyn.[3][2]

4. 2019

   NTK produced a dedicated television story about the artist’s work and the revival of weaving in the Hutsul region.[4]

5. 2020–2021

   34home and The Village Ukraine featured the studio, while Fakty ICTV documented contemporary Ukrainian rug weaving.[5][6][7]

6. 2023–2025

   Kilim Art Studio continued to appear in editorial coverage of Ukrainian rugs, object design and contemporary interiors.[8][9]

From artist to workshop

Kilim Art Studio was founded by artist and interior designer Yana Mikhalyants, a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Her biography is documented by the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine.[1]

After 2014, Mikhalyants moved from Crimea to Pistyn in Ivano-Frankivsk region. Work with wool, ornament and the local weaving community became the foundation of the future workshop. Kilim Art Studio dates the brand’s history to 2015; this year is reported by the studio itself.[2][10]

The Kosiv exhibition and a weaving collaboration

In September 2018, the Museum of Folk Art and Life of the Hutsul Region in Kosiv exhibited Yana Mikhalyants’s painting, decorative cushions and rugs based on her designs. The rugs were woven by Mariia Kichak from Pistyn. Museum and regional coverage document this meeting of authored design and a living Hutsul weaving tradition.[3][2]

Materials, technique and contemporary objects

The workshop’s foundation is handwoven flatweave rugs and runners made from sheep wool. The Village Ukraine described reversible construction, natural materials and Ukrainian ornament, while 34home presented the work as a contemporary interpretation of tradition.[6][5]

The range later expanded to woven cushions and bags with geometric ornament. These directions are documented in editorial roundups and professional interior coverage.[8][9]

Documenting the craft

In 2019, NTK broadcast a dedicated story about Yana Mikhalyants and rug weaving in the Hutsul region. In 2021, Fakty ICTV documented contemporary Ukrainian weaving, the manual process and workshops connecting tradition with current design.[4][7]
